Mechanical and plant engineering is an important enabler and solution provider for the challenges of our time. The focus is on climate change and resource conservation. They are the central issues that mankind must face up to.

Mechanical and plant engineering has a central role to play in this. Companies can make a significant contribution to achieving the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and significantly reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. Green technologies (green tech) are the key to this. They enable energy efficiency and make a circular economy, climate-neutral production and security of supply possible.

Mechanical engineering becomes a decisive enabler for green technology

Following the publication of the IPCC report, it is clear that faster expansion of renewable energies and greater involvement of major emitters are required.

Green technologies enable almost 90 percent less greenhouse gas emissions in industrial applications

Due to its integration in all sectors, the mechanical and plant engineering industry plays a key role in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.

Opportunities and risks of the Green New Deal

The Corona pandemic has also become a decisive point of departure for the EU Commission's climate agenda. The Green New Deal offers many opportunities for the mechanical and plant engineering industry - if it is based on market principles.

Why actually climate neutral ?

Until recently, everyone was talking about the Paris Agreement on climate protection. It aims to limit the average temperature increase to 2 °C, preferably 1.5 °C. Why is there now talk of climate neutrality and what is the connection?

Green Deal
With the "Green Deal", the European Commission has presented a far-reaching program for more climate and environmental protection in the EU in 2019. The central goal is to become climate neutral by 2050, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to 1990 emission levels and to further promote the circular economy in Europe.
Circular economy resource management
The more people live on earth, the more raw materials are consumed. For a long time, products became waste at the end of life. It is much better to preserve the value of products and raw materials for as long as possible and to minimise waste, i.e. to initiate material cycles instead of "consuming" resources. That is the circular economy.
Sustainability Management
Whether climate protection targets, suitability for grandchildren or human rights due diligence obligations - sustainability is on everyone's lips and the expectations on companies to act responsibly are constantly increasing.
Blue Competence
Twelve guiding principles summarise the requirements for sustainability in a clear formula. The VDMA's "Blue Competence" initiative presents solutions from the mechanical and plant engineering industry.
