We can't do without water. Water is the basis of life and water dominates our planet. 71 per cent of the earth's surface is covered by water, full of living creatures, full of fascination and full of energy. Water has enormous powers and abilities, which are also of great importance for industrial use.
Sustainable circular economy in space and on earth
The International Space Station (ISS) has taken on a pioneering role in the development of a sustainable circular economy in space. Innovative water treatment technologies are used to convert the astronauts' waste water, urine and sweat into clean drinking water.
This technology, based on rotation and distillation processes, not only enables efficient water extraction, but also has the potential to support long-term stays in space and revolutionise future space missions.
In addition, the findings from space travel raise important questions about the sustainability of resource utilisation on Earth. The transfer of space technologies to Earth is already showing positive effects, such as the use of membrane technology to purify groundwater. These developments emphasise the importance of research into the sustainable use of resources in space and their potential impact on Earth. Learn more
