The new Ecodesign Regulation replaces the previous directive and extends the scope of the directive from energy-related products to all products. As a result, only safe, circular and sustainable products will be permitted on the EU internal market in future.
In the context of digitalization, the proof of fulfilment of the requirements for the products will be provided by the Digital Product Passport.

In future, the digital product passport is to include all important environmental and material data of a product along its entire life cycle. VDMA sees opportunities and challenges in this concept and calls for the involvement of the industry.
Under the umbrella of the EU Green Deal, the European Commission intends to develop a strategy on "Circular Textile Economy". A strategy adopted by the Commission is expected towards the end of 2021.
The EU Parliament has adopted its position on the new circular economy package. From the VDMA's point of view, this is a good step into the right direction, but too much bureaucracy has to be avoided.
