The new Ecodesign Regulation replaces the previous directive and extends the scope of the directive from energy-related products to all products. As a result, only safe, circular and sustainable products will be permitted on the EU internal market in future.

In the context of digitalization, the proof of fulfilment of the requirements for the products will be provided by the Digital Product Passport.

"Circular economy needs individual solutions"

In the future, the EU wants to allow only sustainable, safe and circular products on the internal market. Product-specific requirements, coupled with a Digital Product Passport, can create space for new business models in the sense of the circular economy. However, it is crucial that the EU does not aim for a 'one-size-fits-all solution' here.

Protect essential knowledge and know-how

In future, the digital product passport is to include all important environmental and material data of a product along its entire life cycle. VDMA sees opportunities and challenges in this concept and calls for the involvement of the industry.

New EU - Strategy "Circular Textile Economy

Under the umbrella of the EU Green Deal, the European Commission intends to develop a strategy on "Circular Textile Economy". A strategy adopted by the Commission is expected towards the end of 2021.

"Circular economy is essential to achieve EU climate targets"

The EU Parliament has adopted its position on the new circular economy package. From the VDMA's point of view, this is a good step into the right direction, but too much bureaucracy has to be avoided.
