Module 1: Status and potentials of IPM against the background of digitization and industry 4.0

If you consult a search engine for "bestselling machine", you will find household products such as espresso machines, hair clippers and the like in the hit lists. A query for "Bestseller Auto" leads to the current sales figures of passenger cars. However, a search for "Bestseller Industry 4.0" will return only: Books on the first hit page.

What is the background? In many companies in the machine and system manufacturing industry, the topic of digitization and Industry 4.0 is still treated primarily according to aspects of a "technology push". This means that the focus is primarily on the technical possibilities that arise as a result of the digital world, which is advancing at a rapid pace of development. Whether Edge and Cloud, AI and Deep Learning, 5G/6G or, in the future, quantum processors, the exponential growth in the performance of digital applications, which has been shaped by Moore's Law, is setting the pace, which is also seemingly unstoppably setting the development agenda of mechanical and plant engineering companies.

Now, however, economic history teaches us impressively that although technology-focused development is typical in emerging, immature markets, in this early phase only very few suppliers are making money. In more mature markets, on the other hand, which are then profitable for the first time and increasingly so, customer and demand orientation is more likely to be the determining factor ("market pull"). Organising and steering precisely this is one of the essential tasks of product and innovation management.

Module 1 of the course deals with the effects of digitization and Industry 4.0 on a professionally organized innovation and product management within companies (and vice versa). Based on scientific studies, best practices will be identified and compared with the realities in the represented companies. Finally, the potentials that the applications of professional innovation and product management promise for the topic area of digitization or Industry 4.0 in the companies of the mechanical and plant engineering sector are shown.

Finally, you will have the opportunity to exchange your experiences and thoughts with colleagues from the other member companies and the speakers.

Module 1 and Module 2 can be booked separately, but it is strongly recommended to participate in both modules, as they are closely linked and strongly build on each other.
