Industry 4.0 and digitalization are integral parts of mechanical and plant engineering and enable it to become an even stronger focus of production. Consequently, the most important resources today are data and information. Until now, these have mostly been made available through proprietary interfaces and must be interpreted in a complex manner to enable further processing in the sense of Industry 4.0. The solution to this problem is standardized interfaces based on the OPC UA communication technology. (These are being developed in the VDMA with over 600 companies in more than 35 working groups - and the trend is rising). Mechanical and plant engineering thus has the chance to define the "world language of production" through its domain know-how.

With the help of umati - universal machine technology interface, this world language of production is to be put into practice through demonstrators, marketing and a community with manufacturers and customers. 

The VDMA also provides support for many other digitalization topics. Software engineering, artificial intelligence, platform economy, 5G, block chain are just some of the topics we are working on together with our members. The startup community also plays an important role. Get to know our services and also learn how you can actively participate in the VDMA's interface standardization activities and which services and activities in the context of Industrie 4.0 and digitalization of the VDMA might be of interest to you beyond that.
