Skills shortage in mechanical and plant engineering: How can challenging trainees be successfully integrated into companies? We discuss strategies and solutions.

The shortage of skilled workers remains a key challenge for companies in the mechanical and plant engineering sector. Despite intensive efforts, the number of junior staff is falling, both in vocational training and in academic, technical professions. At the same time, demographic change is exacerbating the situation: the gap between available skilled workers and company requirements will continue to grow in the coming years. Last year, 9 percent of the training places on offer in the relevant occupational groups in mechanical and plant engineering remained unfilled.
A recent short study by the Tübingen Institute for Applied Economic Research (IAW) on behalf of the VDMA's IMPULS Foundation sheds light on the transitional area between school and work. This area of education is aimed at young people who do not enter training or employment directly after leaving school. The aim is to improve their chances of finding vocational training. In 2023, around 250,000 young people - or 13.5 percent of all young people entering vocational or further training - took part in these programs.
The analysis shows that many of these young people are fundamentally suitable for training. With targeted encouragement and individual support, they could be attracted to the mechanical and plant engineering sector. But how can this potential be optimally utilized? What challenges arise in day-to-day training - and how can companies successfully meet them?
