Automation gap closed! Electronic motor nameplate enables communication between converter and motors (encoder independent) via the motor connection cable: Can you imagine motors communicating with inverters via the motor connection cable independently of the encoder? Electronics no bigger than a matchbox make this possible. Experience the future-oriented possibilities of the innovative PIC technology developed in an FVA research project.

An open electronic motor nameplate enables autonomous, manufacturer-independent communication between the connected controller (inverter) and the motor (encoder-independent) via the motor connection cable. The Power-Interface-Communication (PIC) technology developed in a research project of the FVA at the TH Köln opens up new possibilities for motors:

  • Manufacturer-independent, automated commissioning, since the characteristics of the connected motor unit are immediately available to the inverter via the PIC
  • Better efficiencies due to suitable parameterization
  • When the motor is replaced, the inverter can independently check whether the new drive is suitable for the application
  • Flexibility for the machine builder in the composition of his drive system
  • Each drive is given its own individual digital fingerprint, which the user can use, for example, for the allocation, maintenance and logistics of his systems
  • Small size enables integration into existing motor terminal boxes
  • Cost-oriented design with potential for further cost reduction in series production
  • Communication via shielded motor connection cable up to 150m long
  • Prospective applications in the field of condition monitoring by means of temperature measurement via the on-chip temperature sensor, evaluation of the on-board 3D acceleration sensor and operating hours counter, revolution counter, etc.
